Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica humanitas

Pope Leo has published his first encyclical: Magnifica humanitas. While many report this translating as “Magnificent Humanity”, the official English text probably reflects Leo’s actual thought as it appears in two forms throughout the letter: “humanity in its grandeur” and “the grandeur of humanity”. Beginning from this highly positive regard for humanity, even disfigured by sin, reflects the Christian beliefe in the mystery of the Incarnation: God so loves his creation so much that when it rebels he does not reject it it, but embraces and enters communion with it to redeem and heal it. Communion is at the heart Trinity: God “is” dynamic Communion, unifying conversation between members. Pope Leo offers a critical view on the dangers of “Aritifical Intelligence”, but does not reject it out-right. Recognizing its benefits and dangers, he invites all to consider carefully the path humanity now finds itself on so as to avoid certain mistakes and to work together in a more ethical way to develop “AI” in a way that truly advances the dignity of humankind.

The Vatican has also published a Pastoral Kit resource to assist people to enter into reflection and conversation around the points Pope Leo raised in Magnifica humantias.

Vatican News has also prepared an audiobook for those who may find it easier to listen to.
